"I agree with the point made in the motion for a resolution that the Arab Spring has put the spotlight on the EU’s southern neighbours in recent months and that we must not allow the importance of the Eastern partnership to be overshadowed by this. From an historic perspective, we have stronger links with the eastern countries and they are generally closer to us in cultural terms. In the light of China’s constantly growing economic influence in the countries of the Eastern partnership, I doubt whether concluding and implementing the association agreement, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTAs), should be a high priority and an important requirement for the revised European Neighbourhood Policy with regard to our Eastern partners. We should not forget Russia’s historic sphere of influence in this respect. An approach of this kind could rapidly become an own goal with regard to our ongoing energy dependency. Therefore, I have voted against this motion for a resolution."@en1
