"I voted in favour of the report on the trade aspects of the Eastern partnership, which follows on from the joint communication from the European institutions on ‘a new response to a changing neighbourhood’. The Eastern partnership consists of the European Union, on the one hand and, on the other, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. As the EU is the main export market and the main source of imports for these countries, it was important to introduce new trade agreements suited to changing economic needs and capacities. Moreover, these agreements are in line with the idea of the ‘more for more’ principle. This concept creates a link between political progress on the road to wide-ranging democratisation and the economic liberalisation of trade. This report also stresses the need for regulatory convergence, with the aim of achieving gradual economic integration with the EU’s single market. This report, therefore, sends a strong political and economic signal to the countries in the Eastern partnership and stresses our commitment to them."@en1
