"I voted in favour of this report because the conclusion and implementation of association agreements including Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTAs) is a priority aim and ambition of the reviewed European Neighbourhood Policy regarding the Eastern partners. Only four out of the six countries of the Eastern partnership are already members of the WTO, with the governments of Azerbaijan and Belarus having only observer status. However, all EU Eastern partners, being the ex-USSR states, share the same historical and institutional background. They have also faced similar challenges in their political and socio-economic transition over the past two decades. Furthermore, following the revolutionary events which took place in 2011 in the European Union’s Southern neighbourhood, EU interest has been focused on the southern neighbours and the countries belonging to the Eastern partnership and EU trade relations with them deserve the attention of the EU. Prosperity and stability in the EU’s eastern neighbourhood are in the EU’s utmost interest. As stable and predictable relations between the EU and its Eastern partners develop, trade volumes will undoubtedly increase in both directions. There needs to be an ambitious approach to integrating the economies of the EU and of the Eastern partnership countries through DCFTAs by including other aspects related to free and fair trade."@en1
