"I voted for the report on eCall: a new 112 service for citizens, because it is estimated that the full integration of the system in cars in the EU will save roughly 2 500 lives annually. The aim of the in-vehicle eCall system is to ensure the automatic notification of the emergency services in the case of a serious accident, with the purpose of reducing road fatalities and alleviating the severity of road accident injuries through the faster arrival of qualified and equipped assistance. The emergency call is generated automatically via the activation of in-vehicle sensors which, when activated, establish a voice and data connection directly with the public safety answering points. We should highlight agricultural and industrial vehicles, particularly agricultural tractors, which operate in remote and isolated areas, and are therefore often unable to notify the emergency services in the event of an accident. I voted for the paragraph which calls on the Commission to consider whether the eCall system needs to be extended in the near future to include other vehicles, such as heavy goods vehicles, buses, coaches and powered two-wheelers, and to assess whether it also needs to be introduced for agricultural tractors and industrial vehicles."@en1
