"The eCall system seeks to improve assistance in the event of an accident, as it triggers an automatic call to the respective emergency services, with information about the time of the accident and the exact location, description and driving direction of the vehicle involved. eCall can therefore reduce the number of fatalities and the severity of injuries. This service, which has already been introduced by the Commission on a voluntary basis, will now be made obligatory for all vehicles from 2015. The Member States are therefore called on to define which infrastructure will receive the emergency calls, and mobile network operators are called on to incorporate this system into their networks, so that the calls will be a free public service using the 112 number. Moreover, it must be interoperable with existing private systems and data sharing must be restricted to what is necessary for this specific purpose. I support this report because I believe it benefits the European public, and also because it opens up new opportunities for the motor vehicle industry, as it can be used for new applications and services."@en1
