"Today, during the part-session in Strasbourg, we voted on the report by Mr Koch and Ms Sehnalová. Parliament has come out clearly in support of all motorists in Europe, so that they can benefit from a free emergency call system. Given that the voluntary approach has failed to produce results, the Commission is being urged to put forward legislative measures as soon as possible to ensure that the eCall system becomes obligatory in all EU countries by 2015. In the resolution, the Commission is invited to consider the possibility of extending the system in the near future to other vehicles, such as motorcycles, buses, coaches and lorries. This system uses the technology of 112 emergency calls so as to automatically alert the emergency services of the location of the vehicle in the event of a serious accident, thereby saving lives, reducing the severity of injuries and also ensuring the arrival of qualified and fully equipped paramedics within an hour of the accident, under what is known as the ‘golden hour principle’. The eCall system will enable around 2 500 lives to be saved every year. It is also considered that the public eCall service should be obligatory and available free of charge to all drivers in Europe, regardless of the type of vehicle."@en1
