"I voted in favour. It is my view that from 2015, eCall should be installed in all new models of cars and light vehicles and should function fully throughout the EU, as well as in other European countries wishing to use it. In Lithuania alone, there are more than 6 000 car accidents each year, in which more than 8 000 people are injured and almost 700 killed. The introduction from 2015 of the eCall system in all cars in EU Member States would save 2 500 lives a year, while reducing the severity of injuries by 10-15%. The introduction of the eCall system in a new car would cost less than EUR 100, but the driver should not have to shoulder the financial burden and the eCall service must be free of charge. The system does not send any signals and is completely dormant until sensors detect that a serious accident has taken place and automatically transmit a signal, even if, following the accident, the driver or passenger is unconscious. It will also be possible for a person who has witnessed the accident to activate the system by pressing a button. Research shows that when this technology is applied, rescuers arrive 40% quicker in urban areas and 50% quicker in rural areas. It is regrettable that over the course of more than five years, the voluntary deployment of this system has not produced any results."@en1
