"Every year in the European Union, road accidents give rise to about 40 000 fatalities, and more than 150 000 people suffer permanent disability as a result. These shocking statistics show us how dramatic the situation is and how important it therefore is to find ways of improving it. The report that we adopted today, and which I willingly supported, provides for the introduction of an automatic alarm system: when installed in a vehicle that has been involved in an accident, eCall will, in fact, send an alert concerning the event by making an encoded emergency call to the 112 number, which has now become the single European number for emergencies, valid, that is, in all Member States. Clearly, this will not help to prevent accidents, but it will certainly help rescue teams, for whom rapid and timely reaction is essential, to become more effective. Estimates indicate that it may be possible to save 2 500 human lives every year by means of this system. I hope that there will be many more than this, but in any case, every person that can be saved as a result of this system will nevertheless be a great success and an important result for everyone."@en1
