"On Tuesday, 3 July, Parliament voted by a large majority for the development of the eCall technology, which will be fitted to all new vehicles by 2015. Using in-vehicle sensors, in case of a serious accident, the eCall system automatically alerts the nearest emergency service via the 112 call platform. eCall will provide key information to speed up the intervention of the mobile emergency services, such as the time, accurate location and information about the vehicle. eCall can also be activated manually, for example, in case of a heart attack. This free system will not be permanently operational. There will, therefore, be no risk of violation of personal data or of monitoring of movements. Thanks to this new device, over 2 500 lives could be saved each year and the emergency services will intervene more rapidly. Whilst it will be several years before this system is fully operational, in my opinion, this is a practical initiative that responds directly to citizens’ concerns."@en1
