"Against the background of the rising volume of counterfeit or pirated goods in transit throughout the EU, a standard regulation on guaranteeing the enforcement of intellectual property rights by customs authorities is an absolute must, especially as these goods may also affect end consumers’ health. Given that the decisions to suspend the release from customs or to retain goods likely to infringe an intellectual property right must be taken by specialist staff, references have been omitted to ongoing training for customs officials on pirated or counterfeit goods which need to be easily identified. This is why I propose that the focus be placed at Member State level on customs officials continuing to specialise so that they are as efficient as possible in correctly and quickly detecting goods in transit suspected of being imitations or copies of products protected in the EU."@en1
