"The need to establish a single European railway area stems from a decline in rail transport and aims to reverse this trend and to promote this mode of transport for people and goods, which is quick, safe and less polluting than those running on fossil fuels, particularly air transport. The Member States should closely monitor the implementation of the European railway area and promote the use of this mode of transport domestically, as well as encouraging connectivity between the railway lines of the various Member States. A Europe with a single railway area will be more environmentally friendly and better supplied with goods and services. Following many months of discussion, it has now been possible to reach an agreement with the Council and I would congratulate the rapporteur and the shadow rapporteurs on their work on this report."@en1
