"Mr President, Denmark took over the Presidency at a difficult time. The European debt crisis meant that Europe’s leaders were using all their energy to discuss a fiscal pact and a fiscal union. There was talk of treaties, pacts and institutional changes instead of focusing on strengthening the internal market, eliminating subsidies that distort competition and quite simply boosting growth. The working conditions for the whole of the Presidency have been difficult, however. I would particularly like to thank the Minister for European Affairs, Nicolai Wammen, who has been very visible here in Parliament, and who has worked very hard to involve Parliament in the Presidency’s activities. Thank you for that, Mr Wammen. I am particularly pleased that the Presidency put antibiotics resistance on the agenda, and I am pleased with the Council’s positive conclusions. Of the most important results achieved by the Presidency, I would like to highlight the agreement concerning improved safety in relation to hazardous chemicals. There are also a few flies in the ointment, however. I am disappointed that the Council has decided to reduce the Commission’s proposals for a reform of the common fisheries policy. The Council has, in fact, decided that European fisheries do not need to be made sustainable. I am deeply disappointed that this has happened during the Danish Presidency. All in all, however, I would like to thank the Danish Government for a well-executed and professional Presidency."@en1
