"Mr President, the problem of acute malnutrition in the Sahel countries has reached alarming levels, affecting at least one million children. The population affected by the political and food crisis lives in extreme poverty. In addition, the weakness of the administrative structures of the countries in this region of Africa is conducive to the development and flourishing of organised crime and terrorism, intensifying the security threat not only in this region of the world. In view of the relative proximity of the region, the European Union must be fully committed to stabilising its internal situation and to improving the level of security, which also affects our own security. I therefore fully support the Member States’ call for the mobilisation of all available resources to support the security and development of the Sahel countries and for cooperation in implementing these actions at an international level. As well as the acts of violence against the population by both by the authorities and terrorist groups which deserve condemnation, the cases of abductions of European citizens are particularly shocking. The proliferation of huge quantities of heavy arms in the Sahel region in connection with the Libyan conflict also requires a firm response from the international community."@en1
