"I welcome the vote on the joint motion for a resolution on female genital mutilation. Today, Parliament is making a strong political commitment to the fight against violence against women, and in particular to putting an end to female genital mutilation. This practice is a violation of all fundamental rights and it cannot be justified by tradition, culture or beliefs. It is the duty of the European Union and of the Member States to promote the implementation of binding legislative measures, both within our borders and in third countries, with a view to banning this practice and protecting and supporting victims and all girls and women who are at risk of undergoing this procedure. The legislation must be accompanied by strong and uncompromising legal instruments so that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice and sanctioned. I am calling on the Commission, the Member States, the United Nations and all the other members of the international community to show a real commitment to promoting women’s rights and gender equality, combating violence against women and promoting the empowerment of women."@en1
