"I voted in favour of adopting the report on control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances. The European Union has adopted a number of directives in order to reduce the risk of such accidents occurring and to mitigate their consequences. Major industrial accidents, such as Seveso (Italy, 1976), Bhopal (India, 1984), Schweizerhalle (Switzerland, 1986), Enschede (the Netherlands, 2000), Toulouse (France, 2001) and Buncefield (Great Britain, 2005), have caused significant losses of life and environmental damage. I share the view that the proposed revision of the Seveso II Directive is necessary. However, I would like to emphasise that amendments should only be possible via the ordinary legislative procedure, since the European Parliament should be able to take full advantage of its powers in the decision-making process."@en1
