"Mr President, favourable conditions and more possibilities for production have led to substantial increases in the amount of milk produced, creating critical situations of surpluses and low prices in the milk and dairy market. Many regions with strong production potential have placed those surpluses on the markets of other countries at a reduced price, putting even more pressure on producers from those countries to lower prices. One example of this has been French milk, sold in France at double the prices that it was sold in Galicia. Today, with the sharp rise in the cost of raw materials and production factors, farmers are seeing their capacity to resist low prices severely reduced. This is a bad omen for many of Europe’s farms and productive areas, and seems to be a clear harbinger of what a future without quotas and suitable instruments for regulating supply might look like.
I therefore call for a detailed audit of the regional impact on the thousands of farms across the EU of scrapping these instruments, which currently regulate supply."@en1
