"The values that we defend impel us to condemn strongly the political situation in Guinea-Bissau and the military coup by which the military leaders of the putsch seized power from and imprisoned the interim president and the prime minister. We are calling for the complete restoration of fundamental freedoms, particularly the freedom of expression, the freedom of the press, and the freedom of assembly and of movement. We are calling for a consensus to be found to restore the country to political stability, which is crucial for this region in the world and also for very much further afield. Guinea-Bissau is a hub for drug trafficking to the European market. Finally, on the insistence of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the international community, we are calling for an immediate return to constitutional order and the rule of law and the holding of free elections."@en1
