"Energy is one of the most important preconditions to a climate of economic growth and prosperity in the EU and, hence, in Greece. Apart from each Member State’s potential to exploit its soil/subsoil and alternative sources in this direction, the EU’s security of supply still largely depends on the outside. This European dependence is both a weakness and a strength. It is a weakness because there is no energy self-sufficiency and it is a strength because, as the leading global energy importer, good terms can be negotiated with suppliers. However, as well as securing reliable and cost-competitive access to global energy supplies, it is very important to strengthen the competitiveness and security of Europe or to ensure that the best possible use is made of Member States’ own resources, means and reserves. This is the thrust of the report, which I voted in favour of."@en1
