"After the success achieved in 2011, which was the European Year of Voluntary Activities, the European Parliament decided to continue its legacy. It is important to build a consistent EU dimension for volunteering, which would support the development of this field. It is worth noting that more than 100 million European citizens across all Member States and from all age groups are engaged in volunteering. Volunteering is a great source of informal learning, and cross-border volunteering in particular opens up the opportunity for intercultural enrichment for European citizens of all ages. Volunteering is gradually assuming the role of catalyst for social change and is an indispensable tool in the active support of society. As well as being an expression of active citizenship in all spheres of social life, volunteering is also an important tool for the development of democratic values, human dignity, equality and the principle of subsidiarity. It is for these very reasons that I, together with the S&D Group, actively support this report."@en1
