The figures show that there are 100 million European citizens working in various voluntary activities who are able to contribute 5% of European GDP. Eighty per cent of citizens consider volunteering to be an important element of democratic life and a significant means by which each individual can participate in society. The need to continue to differentiate clearly and unequivocally between the value of volunteering provided free of charge, and profit-making activities, still remains.
