The floods which hit the regions of Liguria and Tuscany in October 2011 caused severe damage to residential homes, businesses and agriculture and the disruption of major transport links and essential public infrastructure networks, and represented a huge tragedy for Italian citizens. The Italian authorities estimate that the total direct damage caused by the flooding amounts to EUR 722.5 million.
