"Mr President, the free movement of persons and equal treatment are some of the fundamental operating principles upon which the European Union is based. Switzerland’s introduction of restrictions on the number of permanent residence permits is a flagrant violation of these principles. We are loathe to believe that any harm is meant, but the facts speak for themselves. It is notable that this issue affects the European Union Member States which in the past experienced isolation and the yoke of Communism, and is thus a test of sorts, as to whether the two Europes have become one, and whether we are together or separate. I firmly believe that the European Parliament will provide the European Commission with a strong case to put forward in further work and actions in respect of our Swiss friends. We will not allow any confrontational language to be used, but we believe that this is a situation which should not be allowed, and we firmly believe that a solution will be found quickly, since such a situation should not be allowed in a free Europe."@en1
