"Mr President, Switzerland is a small white speck in the heart of Europe. Wherever you go as a Swiss national – east or west, north or south – you always reach the EU within a couple of hours. Obviously, Switzerland wants a good relationship with the EU: freedom of trade, travel and employment and, of course, the EU wants a good relationship with Switzerland. That is why we have a treaty regulating such matters, but that treaty is clearly insufficient. Switzerland seems to be misusing one of its provisions in order to make a distinction between EU citizens who are welcome and EU citizens who are not welcome. That is discrimination, pure and simple, towards Central and Eastern Europeans, and that is simply unacceptable. I hope that the Commission will find a way to give this short shrift. We do not accept distinctions being made between EU citizens. Every person in our Union is worth the same and has the same fundamental rights. That is the basis of everything and we need to defend it to the utmost."@en1
