"Mr President, in recent years, we have seen many crises which have made us aware of the scale of possible problems arising in relation to the availability of resources and their guaranteed and uninterrupted supply. Rapidly increasing food prices or difficulties in accessing rare earth metals are just some examples which have affected the European economy. The problem of the efficient use of resources is one of the key challenges faced by the EU in the near future. It is high time to take the necessary action – most certainly not the establishment of yet more discussion committees, which do not help us to achieve our objectives, but only create yet more unrealised strategies. In this situation, we need real initiatives and projects, and I would add: more responsible ones than some of those recommended in the report. With the advantages gained from being forerunners in the rational use of resources, we will be able not only to become more independent of external suppliers, but also to maintain our economic position in the global arena."@en1
