"Mr President, the European Commission has given us a sound basis for a good report. I congratulate the rapporteur and the Commissioner for their efforts and for soldiering on in the right direction. We obviously share the belief that we cannot rely on sustained growth without a transition to a more efficient use of natural resources.
Among the sound general guidelines, I welcome primarily an integrated and planned approach, which necessarily concerns legislators, producers, managers, educational institutions and civil society. I am particularly pleased with the call for the setting up of a system of indicators for an efficient use of natural resources. Without them, we would not be able to measure the progress of our efforts.
I also support the plan to integrate resource efficiency targets into the European Semester on economic policy coordination. Equally, I support the plan to abolish all environmentally harmful subsidies.
I firmly believe that efficient use of natural resources will not only mean a more responsible attitude to nature, but that it will also bring new jobs, new technologies and new impetuses for development.
I welcome the readiness to remove barriers to the functioning of the European recycling market.
This is the first time we have spoken in a report in favour of cutting down the intake of animal protein. This is not only about reducing land use, but also about reducing the harmful effects of animal protein on health.
I am pleased that the report also points out the global aspect of resource management."@en1
