"Mr President, I would like to thank Mr Gerbrandy for his report. We all share the aim, surely, of conserving resources and using them effectively. The report includes several points, however, that are very hard for me to accept, or which are totally unacceptable. These ‘red rags’ in the report include the calls to introduce further taxation at European level and dual taxation, and there is even talk of an environmental tax and a tax on natural resources. During a time of protracted economic crisis, I consider this disastrous for Europe, to say the very least. Extending the Ecodesign Directive, I am afraid, will also lead to more bureaucracy rather than actual benefits for Europe and her citizens. In terms of the other details I would like to mention, I consider the sections on recycling and composting to be highly praiseworthy. We are all, surely, in favour of Europe moving away from dumping waste in landfills. I agree very much with this, and I support the proposal. I would like to ask everyone to agree on striking out the comments on halting waste incineration, as this would be rather counterproductive in the current situation. For the reasons mentioned, I personally will not be able to support this report."@en1
