"Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, the current crisis in the European Union confronts us with problems such as high unemployment, debt and economic recession, which we need to resolve immediately. At the same time, there are also other issues which are not noticeable at first glance, but which need to be resolved just as quickly, such as the efficient use of resources in our society. In the coming years, the world’s middle-class population will reach 3 billion. It is encouraging for us to see that developing countries, too, are reaping the benefits of their labour during the globalisation process, but at the same time, we should not forget about our planet’s limited resources. We must start living within this planet’s means by rethinking our habits, our current production system and the excessive consumption of resources. This will be the only way to guarantee us sustainable growth. Sustainable growth can only be achieved by devising an alternative programme of innovation to focus on using the resources that we already have in the most efficient way possible. This is of paramount importance if we want to resolve the problem of resource supply security for Europe, as well as the problem of the shortage of resources globally, which will grow steadily worse in the future. Global problems need global solutions and the European Union’s efforts in this area must not remain in isolation. The Rio +20 conference is approaching and Europe needs to take responsibility as a global leader by promoting its efficiency programme. I would like to thank my colleague Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy for his magnificent work, as well as Commissioner Potočnik."@en1
