"Mr President, Mr Potočnik, congratulations on this courageous report. It is not easy to table a report on resources that covers all areas of our economic policy.
Resource efficiency is not a green dream, but rather a basic requirement for our future economic policy. That is why it is only right that we also look at it from the perspective of the competitiveness of our society and our industry. That is why I believe that it is necessary for us to conduct this broad debate without, at the same time, calling for legislation. I am even sure that we can settle a great deal by making agreements, in that we will be drawing industry’s attention to how much more efficient we need to be.
Moderation was tried by Ludwig Erhard in Germany, my father tried it with me, I have tried it with my children, but it does not work. We have to find another way, and that way is efficiency. Once upon a time, I had a car that had fuel consumption of 12 litres per 100 kilometres; then I had one with fuel consumption of seven litres; now our fuel consumption is three litres. That is precisely the road that we must go down.
Was there actually anything wrong with our fathers’ metaphor for efficiency, about how it meant managing the forest well? You only take as much wood from the forest as will grow again each year. If we can take this even half to heart, then we will have made progress.
That is why I am very grateful to Mr Gerbrandy, who is an excellent and pleasant person to work with. We have laid a good foundation. Now and again, my friends on the other side of the House go a bit far. Do we really want to ban people from eating meat? Do you really expect us to write an eco-audit on every bill? What are people to do if they split the bill? Let us take a deep breath, then, and delete a few things.
The indicator approach is absolutely right, but that, too, is a process that cannot be done overnight. Mr Gerbrandy, we will try to work together to remove what is nonsense and to highlight the good aspects."@en1
