"Mr President, the failure to date of efforts to bring peace to the two Sudanese States and, in particular, the failure of the recent peace agreement, does not augur well in terms of preventing a resumption of the conflict that has lasted for decades now and the continuing decimation of the two countries. The two countries depend on each other economically and thus need to find ways to cooperate. The two States therefore need to stop stirring up and supporting the other side’s enemies, as this is hampering the peace process. The weakening of Sudan, due to the fact that it is now dependent on South Sudan, may weaken relations between that country and its African neighbours and, possibly, strengthen relations with Arab and Islamic countries and boost Islamic powers. Particular attention must be paid to that issue. The economic situation in Sudan has palpably deteriorated over 2012, as the oil flow has stopped. Thus, the economy is expected to shrink by 9.4% this year and inflation is expected to rocket to 19% in 2012 and to keep rising. The European Union needs to take account of these worrying dimensions and the High Representative needs to act accordingly."@en1
