"Mr President, my colleague, Ms Lösing, has already expressed our position on this conflict, and I wanted to add that we should not deceive ourselves.
When the United States, Israel and then the EU supported and financed the partition of Sudan without prior, mutual agreement between the future states over the disputed 2 000 km of shared border and the extraction and transportation of crude oil, it was clear where we were headed.
Is it surprising that there is now a conflict? This conflict was given backing because it was part of a geostrategic plan by the West, whose sole aim was to remove from Arab control those areas of Sudan that are richest in oil so as to link them to pro-Western states in the east of Africa.
This is the same old story – the West and oil. What about poverty? How important was poverty to the West? I think this is yet another lesson for us all: over and above oil and geostrategic interests come poverty and people, people who are suffering."@en1
