When the United States, Israel and then the EU supported and financed the partition of Sudan without prior, mutual agreement between the future states over the disputed 2 000 km of shared border and the extraction and transportation of crude oil, it was clear where we were headed. Is it surprising that there is now a conflict? This conflict was given backing because it was part of a geostrategic plan by the West, whose sole aim was to remove from Arab control those areas of Sudan that are richest in oil so as to link them to pro-Western states in the east of Africa. This is the same old story – the West and oil. What about poverty? How important was poverty to the West? I think this is yet another lesson for us all: over and above oil and geostrategic interests come poverty and people, people who are suffering."@en1
