It is regrettable that the text does not represent a significant improvement on the Commission’s proposal, and I am not convinced that it is consistent with the EU’s obligation, as laid down in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, to achieve good environmental status by 2020. On the plus side, the new rules will come into effect before the next fishing season. For the long term, however, a much greater level of ambition is needed if we are to save our fish stocks."@en1
