"Mr President, I voted against the report as a whole because, in my opinion, implementing the proposed regulations would, in practice, mean imposing an excessive burden on citizens at a time when Europe is experiencing the difficulties involved in an economic crisis. Imposing new taxes, with the pretext of fighting the crisis, is a road that is leading nowhere. In my view, the solutions set out in the directive will not have the effect intended, but instead they will only lead to confusion and bring negative effects for the national economies of Europe. I agree that the financial sector was the main cause of the crisis, and it therefore bears a great deal of responsibility. However, a common system of taxation risks having a negative impact on the EU’s development and competitiveness at a global level, and also places a disproportionate burden on the financial sector of individual countries. There are enormous differences between the economic situations of citizens in the various countries, and thus any financial transaction tax system should remain under the control of the Member States."@en1
