"Mr President, today, Parliament can send a strong signal to the Council to introduce a financial transaction tax. In particular, it can send a tangible message to citizens and businesses who are asking us what we are doing to address the economic crisis.
Talking in practical terms, a financial transaction tax will produce a revenue of almost EUR 60 billion which will be earmarked for development, employment and curbing the tax burden on citizens. It would, however, also send a message of fairness because, as called for by our citizens, the financial sector, too, must pay its fair share to meet the costs of the economic crisis; it must absolutely do its part. I would like to thank Ms Podimata for her work."@en1
