"Today, the European Parliament is sending a clear signal to European citizens, having just strengthened our direct link with them. Citizens now have a powerful tool for participatory democracy which consolidates their involvement in decision making within the Union and which, ultimately, helps strengthen our European democracy. I voted for this report because I believe in the spirit of initiative and in citizen engagement. I believe in the virtues of organising public hearings at the European Parliament so that this engagement is given a voice. For this reason, I would like to emphasise the crucial role of the Committee on Petitions in organising these public hearings as it does indeed have the most expertise and know-how in this field. I call on the Commission to keep us up to date with the implementation of the citizens’ initiative scheme and of any obstacles encountered by citizens so that we can take the necessary steps, as quickly as possible and without delay, to make it as simple as possible for citizens to use this instrument. I therefore urge all my fellow Members of Parliament to seek to ensure that this scheme actually provides a strong and effective bridge between the day-to-day life of citizens and our work."@en1
