"I support this report because fighting violence against women, including honour killings and forced marriages, remains a major challenge for Turkey. I am particularly concerned by the ineffectiveness of the existing remedies and by the lenience of the Turkish authorities as regards punishing the perpetrators of gender-based crimes. For this reason, it is fundamental that women’s rights and gender mainstreaming are upheld in the new Turkish Constitution. Coordinated action is also needed in the areas of education, work and representation at national and local level. It is important to stress that economic and social underdevelopment in disadvantaged areas of Turkey, as well as problems stemming from immigration, poverty and prevailing patriarchal social structures, aggravate women’s problems and undermine their position."@en1
