"I voted for the de Jong report on an EU approach on criminal law because it is a good analysis of the state of play in the construction of a European criminal law system, which has been made more important by the Treaty of Lisbon. Indeed, increasing European integration, not just economically but also as regards ‘freedom, security and justice’, is inseparable from the issue of the integration of criminal law and criminal procedure. Furthermore, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which protects the European public from the EU itself, could require criminal protection instruments. The gradual setting out of ‘federal’ criminal law is also an essential pillar in the construction of a genuine European ‘polity’, which is the basis of the constitutionalisation of the European Union."@en1
