"I voted in favour of this report because apart from ordinary circulation euro coins, in accordance with the rules, EU Member States can also issue commemorative euro circulation coins to celebrate certain subjects. However, in order to ensure that such coins only make up a small proportion of all euro coins in circulation, a certain limit on the number of commemorative circulation coins needs to be set. Reducing the number of commemorative coins in circulation would simplify administrative procedures, such as procedures to protect the euro against counterfeiting. Given the scale of their payment services, credit institutions and other providers of payment services, as well as all other institutions involved in handling and distributing banknotes and coins, have an obligation to ensure the authenticity of euro banknotes and coins which they receive and intend to put back into circulation and to recognise counterfeit money. The reduction in the number of commemorative coins in circulation will give the Member States the opportunity to check more effectively and efficiently the authenticity of euro coins throughout the euro area."@en1
