"In a single market without internal borders, like the European market, it is vital that all Member States agree a definition of small and medium-sized enterprises. This will then ensure that the measures taken to determine and control eligibility for funding are consistent and do not create imbalances in the market. It is therefore important that the currently applicable definitions of ‘micro-’, ‘small-’ and ‘medium-sized’ enterprises not be changed. The proposal to raise the size limit for a medium-sized enterprise from 250 to 1 000 employees would effectively create a two-tier system in which companies of quite dissimilar size and wealth would be categorised together, thus inevitably favouring the larger organisations."@en1
