"I welcome the vote on this resolution on the EU’s commercial strategy for Southern Mediterranean countries. The text is very balanced and constitutes a good, in-depth analysis of the current situation following the Arab Spring. It offers, I think, some good medium- and long-term prospects. Beyond a simple commercial strategy, this is about developing trade with our neighbours and guiding them so as to provide support for the democratic transition of these countries. It is vital that we play a role at this level so that their populations see a significant improvement in their rights and living conditions.
That is why it nonetheless seemed important to me to draw the attention of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) to certain issues, for example, the greater involvement of civil society in future partnerships. It would also be sensible for the European Central Bank to give stronger support to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Southern Mediterranean countries. SMEs should be at the heart of growth in these countries. In conclusion, I will finish on a point which, to me, seems fundamental: mobility and student exchanges between both shores of the Mediterranean. It would be advisable to adopt extensive programmes promoting such exchanges, since our countries’ future depends on a greater understanding of each other."@en1
