"I voted against this report as I do not believe it is the prerogative of the EU to act as a mediator in international affairs and set terms for democratic transitions and trade deals, etc. As part of the international community, Britain as a sovereign country and member of NATO and the UN has opportunity to cast its opinion in such matters. However, the EU is a democratically bankrupt supranational organisation that I believe is on the cusp of witnessing its own revolutionary spring as elections across Europe demonstrate growing distaste for austerity-led policies to protect the single currency. It is thus laughable that the EU should demand support for the transition to democracy in the Arab Spring countries when it has shown little willingness over the past few decades to host open and fair referenda and tackle the democratic deficit of its own triumvirate system."@en1
