"Millions of citizens in the European Union use mobile phones in their everyday communications. The number of these users is increasing almost on a daily basis, which provides for the conditions of easier communication. Still, most European citizens will switch off mobile services when travelling abroad in order to avoid receiving hefty bills from their service providers. This undesirable situation is due primarily to the still overly weak competition on the roaming market. Excessive roaming tariffs and the consequent low level of use of roaming services within the EU are not in the interests of European consumers or of the European economy. The present situation is also incompatible with the fundamental idea of a European digital single market. The regulation adopted now seeks to find a remedy for this situation and therefore I, too, supported this proposal."@en1
