"I voted in favour of the report on an EU biodiversity strategy to 2020 because the environment and natural resources are a fundamental asset to human well-being. I emphasise the importance of mainstreaming biodiversity protection and preservation in the development, implementation and funding of all other EU policies – including those on energy, industry, transport, tourism, research and innovation – in order to make the EU’s sectoral and budgetary policies more coherent. I believe that Member States should cooperate and coordinate their efforts in order to ensure more effective use of natural resources and avoid losses in terms of biodiversity and ecosystem services in both rural and urbanised areas. I urge the Member States to design their forestry policies in such a way as to take full account of the importance of forests in protecting biodiversity, in preventing soil erosion, in carbon sequestration and air purification and in maintaining the water cycle. The increasing deterioration of essential habitats, such as wetlands, should be treated as a priority and addressed by means of urgent measures that actually correspond to the special protection status granted to them by the EU."@en1
