"I support efforts to increase innovation in universities and for greater mobility for young people, and I think that a strength of the Tőkés report is that it refers to the autonomy of universities and that it lends its support to the Erasmus programme and to the need for home universities to recognise qualifications acquired while studying at other universities. I think another great strength of the report is its call for collaboration with the countries which are covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy.
The report also contains worrying features, and among these I do not support the proposal to introduce uniform criteria for the creation of pan-European rankings of higher education institutions or the intention to introduce, within the study cycle, a compulsory training period at a university in a Member State other than the one to which the student is affiliated. A decision like this should be completely voluntary, not imposed on students from above. For these reasons, I decided to abstain."@en1
