"Madam President, Commissioner, biodiversity in Europe is truly in dire straits. This applies to 65% of our habitats and 52% of species, with 88% of fish being fished in excess of permissible levels. We must, without fail, mobilise the instruments that exist where the money exists, which means under the common agricultural policy and the common fisheries policy. Clearly, we must obviously stop subsidising actions that further exacerbate the existing drastic situation.
As regards the common fisheries policy, we need to create a new instrument, a compulsory network of ‘no fishing areas’ that will allow stocks to recover. More fish means stronger coastal communities and obviously means better biodiversity and fishermen with higher incomes. One final comment: the news on the forest strategy is indeed that it is moving in the opposite direction from the majority opinion in Parliament."@en1
