"Madam President, the European natural heritage is a major ecological asset which contributes to the well-being of all citizens, and therefore all EU Member States should cooperate and coordinate their efforts to ensure a more effective use of natural resources and limit biodiversity degradation. When we speak of biodiversity, we must refer to both the extraordinary biodiversity existing in parks and nature reserves, which are already protected or in the process of being included on the list, and the ordinary biodiversity, also known as functional biodiversity. It plays a major role in maintaining the habitat of small fauna and insects, especially those contributing to plant pollination. On the other hand, the preservation of basic natural resources, of animal and plant genetic resources and of the environment, and the coordination of agricultural technological processes are necessary in order to be able to ensure that conditions for future generations are met. I believe that in order to ensure the preservation of biodiversity, it is essential to have a balance between the European biodiversity strategy and Member States’ rural development."@en1
