"Mr President, the public has found and continues to find it difficult to accept biometric passports. It is not easy for people to accept new things, especially if they are not adequately explained. Admittedly, although it seems to be a very secure system for identifying travellers, fraud does occur due to the availability of technologies and different devices that help hackers steal data from chips. People are afraid that, just like bank card details are stolen, it will also be just as easy for data to be stolen from chips featuring biometric passport content.
I believe that the public needs to be better informed about what a biometric passport is, as well as about the security features which it offers. The possibility must be looked into of creating in the future a system where the radio frequency-based ID device contained on the passport’s chip can be detected only by the relevant authorities."@en1
