"The Treaty of Lisbon, which entered into force nearly two and a half years ago, has become a significant milestone in the development of the protection of fundamental rights not only in the European Union, but also in Europe. It is clearly established in the Treaty of Lisbon that the EU will accede to the European Convention on Human Rights. I am pleased that this accession will further enhance and foster the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms in the EU thanks to the fact that the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg will assume the power to review the compliance of the Union’s actions with the Convention. I would therefore like to express the hope that they will succeed without undue delay in resolving the remaining legal uncertainties and that Member States will find an acceptable agreement to allow the European Union to accede to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms at the earliest possible opportunity."@en1
