"Taking into account the already tight financial situation which European companies in all sectors of the Union’s economy are having to cope with as a result of the global financial crisis and the ongoing sovereign debt crisis in the euro area, the ECR Group does not consider the timing is right for a Copernican-type revolution with respect to the structure of energy taxation and would rather see a more modest review of the existing directive on energy taxation adopted in 2003. Moreover, we consider it crucial for both the Council and Parliament to request an independent impact assessment of the Commission’s proposal for the future energy taxation that is to be based on two components – CO emissions and the energy content of products – before any changes to the current regime are implemented. We have persistent doubts about the economic sustainability of the Commission’s proposal."@en1
