The European Union has a responsibility to promote responsible and sustainable energy policies. Accordingly, I decided to vote in favour of the report on the taxation of energy products, which sets out a series of measures designed to promote energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. I also think that the amendments adopted by Parliament have significantly improved the Commission’s proposal and in particular I would highlight the importance of getting rid of the article that would have forced the Member States, for the purposes of fiscal neutrality, to apply the same rates to all energy sources put to the same use. This amendment allows the Member States to retain different levels of tax on diesel and petrol. Increasing the excise duties on gas oil would actually have caused a drop in competitiveness in the European motor vehicle industry, which is traditionally stronger in the production of diesel engines, with obvious repercussions on employment. The greater energy efficiency of diesel engines is also a scientific fact, which is why we need to be able to retain a favourable tax regime on gas oil. For these reasons I voted in favour of the amendment to the Commission’s proposal, which removes the principle of fiscal neutrality. I also voted in favour of the report in question."@en1
