"I welcome the fact that Parliament has approved the Agreement between the European Union and the United States on the transfer of Passenger Name Records. I believe that we must facilitate the sharing of information in order to fight more effectively against international crime. However, this should be done totally transparently with respect for individual freedoms. The agreement reached here increases data security in comparison with the previous 2007 agreement. The retention period for the data has been reduced and passengers may at all times access their data and, if necessary, correct them. As far as the fight against terrorism is concerned, I believe that agreements between the European Union and a third country are more advantageous than bilateral agreements negotiated by Member States on an individual basis."@en1
